I grow Ribes odoratum (clove currant) and it makes great jelly/sauce. It is either very resistant or not affected by the pine blister rust depending on sources. It has gorgeous fragrant flowers very early in the spring and great fall color. The fruit is dark purple/black.

I bought mine through a mail order catalog in NY that specializes in cold hardy fruit.

Not sure about that Martha Stewart comparison, but the tree was a hit with something. The donuts are all gone and there are lots of footprints in the snow around it, either dog, child or ????

Well, Mary, the Martha Stewart of Northfield, your garden ideas always sound (and look) wonderful. Thanks for the bird tree idea. I think I’ll make one for my friends–the winged and un-winged ones. Translation–”unwinged” would be the young kids in my life.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for the fried bruschetta and tomato recipe. I just saw the movie over the weekend, and I can’t get that image out of my head. I will make it for dinner tonight, despite the fact that I won’t be able to use tomatoes and herbs from my garden.

I agree, just having seeds is not enough, it is important to learn how to garden! Initially, when beginning to plant a garden, start small and work your way up. Have a small garden plot or do container gardening if you are short on space.
